Thesis Ideas for Paper

Barack Obama's messages of accessibility, modernity, and optimism were manifested in the fashion choices of the first family on January 20 at the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Swearing In. The colors that they wore were bright, new, and optimistic.

2009 Presidential Inaugural Wardrobe

The Presidential Inauguration proved to be an incredibly exciting and exhilarating celebration of unity, change, and patriotism. As I stood out in the mall on January 20 in the blue section of the swearing in, I paid careful attention not just President Obamas speech, but the wardrobe of our new first family. The first family all looked smart, clean, sophisticated, and yet not pompous.
President Obama wore a sharp black suit against a crisp white oxford shirt and a vibrant and outstanding red tie. Against a backdrop of American flag images, the President looked extremely authoritative, powerful, and pride while simultaneously presenting an image of humility, and personability.

Barack’s wife, Michelle Obama, who has recently been coined as the new Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis because of the similarities in her wardrobe selections, wore a vibrant and electric apple green dress and coat, adorned with hand beaded crystals, and topped off with a sparkling diamond necklace. Her hair was straight and conservative, her makeup clean and sophisticated.
Barack’s two daughters, Sasha and Mailia were clothed by J.Crew’s kid’s collections, Crew Cuts. J. Crew made special edition outfits for the two young girls that are not from the regular J.Crew catalog and cannot be purchased. Sasha wore an electric radiating violet dress and coat. While Malia sported a beautiful emanating orange dress and coat.

The family did look very reminiscent of Robert Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, but there was a more every man quality about their choice in wardrobe. Rather than wear high priced couture designers, they wore things that seemed so much more attainable and accessible. While people cannot go out and purchase the J.Crew outfits worn by Sasha and Mailia, the fact that their outfits were made by J.Crew, and not an expensive high end designer, adds to the appeal of the image of Obama originating back to his campaign – as a more accessible president and a President of the people.

I look forward to seeing how the Presidential wardrobe further influences fashion across the nation as well as goes on to influence the legacy that will be created of the iconic legend that surrounds the United States of America’s first African American first family.
